Tanya Ishikawa, a member of the Adams-Jefferson Greens, is running for the Ward I seat of the Federal Heights City Council. The election is all mail-in ballot. Ballots are being mailed the week of Oct. 10, and must be returned by Nov. 1 Election Day. Federal Heights is a city in Adams County, just north of Denver between Westminster and Thornton. The city’s population is approximately 13,000.
Tanya is a very active community volunteer. She served on the Westminster Human Services Board for two years and the Federal Heights Planning Commission for one year. Her volunteer activities include assisting senior citizens and producing a fundraising video for the Senior Hub, serving on the board of the Open Media Foundation, volunteering for nonprofit events of organizations such as the MS Society and The Studio School PTO.
Tanya is an award-winning professional writer and small business owner, providing stories and content for newspapers, newsletters, magazines, business correspondence, web sites, and TV/film. She is also the mother of a 6-year-old son, who is now a 1st-grade student at The Studio School in Northglenn.
Tanya was appointed to the Federal Heights City Council in 2007 and served two years. She ran for election in 2009 but lost by 9 votes to a candidate who had served for 12 years on council. During the 2011 election, Tanya faces one other candidate who is a newcomer to local politics.
Tanya says, “I am dedicated to studying the issues presented to council by staff, residents and local business people, to help come up with the best policies for maintaining and improving city infrastructure and amenities. I want to ensure the city government remains accountable to citizens, and values the personal liberty of every individual, family and worker in the city.”
She continues, “This is a nonpartisan race and nonpartisan office. Still, I plan to use Green values in my decision-making. I believe that the goals of environmental sustainability, community-focused economics and the other key values of the Greens are consistent with good choices for my community. I am looking forward to another opportunity to work with our government staff and the residents to manage our services and facilities with those goals in mind.”

Tawnya- Good luck on your upcoming race. I admire your stance on accountability and Council being responsive to the citizens. There is much that could be done in this City to help people- unfortunately I have found a significant number of obstacles in the way. Best of luck Ted May
Ted, Thanks for your comment on my campaign statement. I do believe there are more challenges in Federal Heights than in some communities with more standard planning and development. Due to how our city developed over the years, citizens have certain types of properties and certain expectations about their uses that are not harmonious with each other and do not adapt well to updated community and property design standards. Though we need to strive for the most energy-efficient, safe, pedestrian-friendly, sanitary, and economically viable city, we also need to balance the needs and abilities of our citizens to fit into those community goals. I hope creative solutions including education, grants, and various cooperative projects can help get us to where we all want to go – a bright future in a sustainable community. Tanya
