Colorado needs more Green Party members on City Councils. “Think globally and act locally” is not just a catchy phrase!
Did you know that most Colorado municipal elections take place in the fall of election years between the state and national elections? Denver is actually one of the few cities in the state with spring elections. So, 2011 could be your chance to step up and make a difference in your community by bring Green values to your city government.
While some cities may have already closed candidate submissions, many are still accepting candidate nominations. In most cases, getting on the ballot means just collecting less than 100 signatures. This should be easy for any candidate with a little support and some previous local community service.
If you are not ready for City Council yet, this would be a great time to start getting more experience and connections by joining a city board or commission. These appointed positions usually require no more than one meeting per month, and the main qualification for appointment is usually interest and commitment.
Contact your City Clerk TODAY to find out the rules and timeline for your city elections or to learn about board and commission openings. You can find your city clerk information by clicking on the name of your city on this CML city government page. Then, search under departments for City Clerk to get the contact information.
Remember, if you are not ready to run, you can learn more about this year’s candidates and support the ones with the most Green values. You can even find existing leaders who share green values in the community, encourage them
to change parties and run as a Green, and commit to helping them in their campaigns. Getting Green policies on local government agendas and preparing local Green politicians for future state and national offices starts with your civic education. Then, you can share your knowledge with others in your community and put your campaign donations, volunteer efforts and vote where your heart and mind is.
