Leaders of the Green Party of Colorado breathed a sigh of relief this week as the Pueblo County Commissioners unanimously rejected a private nuclear power development. We applaud the commissioners for rejecting this unsustainable, unhealthy plan for power generation in the state, and give kudos to Commissioner John Cordova for wisely raising concerns about spent fuel rod storage.
Colorado Green Party officers agree with county officials that there is “no clear solution” to storage of spent nuclear fuel rods and nuclear energy production’s effects on water supplies. However, we are dismayed over Commissioner Anthony Nunez’s support of coal as the more cost-effective solution and Commissioner Jeff Chostner’s statement that ” At some place, at some time, we need to make nuclear energy appropriate.”
The true alternatives to nuclear energy – and the most practical, safe and healthy energy solutions – are renewable sources including solar and wind. Colorado has abundant quantities of both resources, and a true commitment by government and the private sector would make the development of renewables more affordable. We will continue to push for state and local policies that support renewable energy production, as well as conservation amd efficiency, and run candidates with these goals in national, state, county and city elections.
