On Tuesday, the Green Party presidential ticket was jailed for protesting the continuing predatory foreclosure practices of the banking industry. Dr. Jill Stein and her running mate Cheri Honkala, along with labor lawyer James Moran and Sister Margaret McKenna of the Medical Mission Sisters, were participating in a sit-in demonstration on banker’s row in Philadelphia, PA when they were taken into custody.
This year the Green Party has been the only party to be present at Occupy demonstrations across the country. We are the party that supports a strong social contract, with an eye toward moving away from corporate-sponsored legislation. Dr. Stein’s protest this week is just one way she leads by example.

Green Party President ticket Jailed ? Wow Why vote for a Jail bird
Indeed. Why vote for a Nelson Mandela? Why vote for a woman’s suffragist arrested while demonstrating for her rights? Why vote for any selfless leader willing to stand up for the rights of the abused, unheard and less fortunate? Oh yes, because they are the kind of people who will make the most generous, fair, democratic politicians.
Ron,
Just look at why these people were jailed. They were jailed because they were standing up for what they believe in! Whatever your politics, this should be something that should be respected, not reviled! Think of the great leaders of the past who have gone to jail for what they believed in – as a matter of protest. Let’s see… Mohandas Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandella, Howard Zinn (yes, I included a historian!), Rosa Parks, and so many more! These are just the ones I came up with in my own rummaging through my own brain in 2 minutes. One of the reasons these people were able to affect so much change was that they were willing to be arrested to bring focus to issues, even if it was only through the courts. Isn’t this courage, something to be lauded as the best of people and society, and exactly what we want from our leaders?
I’m sorry. If you really think that Rosa Parks’s arrest made her ineligible for future public office, then you are part of the problem, not the solution. Jill Stein and Cheri Honkala earned my vote by this act of protest. They pulled a strong Obama supporter away because I am tired of rhetoric and ready for action.
