Jill Stein, the Green Party presidential nominee, issued the following statement today regarding the recent shootings in Aurora, Colorado:
“Our hearts go out to the victims of this senseless violence. The sympathy and support of our nation must be with the people of Colorado as they try to deal with this tragedy.
This is the latest in a series of tragedies that call for us to redouble our efforts to reduce the level of violence on the streets of our nation and in the policies of our government. Too many people in America are living in fear for what the next night may bring. Too many families are grieving the loss of a loved one. We must not tolerate the glorification of violence. And we must reject the idea that more violence is the best answer to inflicted or threatened violence. A return of compassion and a rededication to peace must start with our leaders in Washington and extend down to every American. We can deescalate. We can heal the wounds. We can learn to prevent violence and not merely to seek retribution after the fact. This is the best way to honor the injured and to protect the innocent.”
