At the January meeting of the Southwest Greens, with 10 members in attendance, we discussed our upcoming Earth Day project. We will inform the local communities of the problems with plastic grocery bags. We have obtained a copy of the 12-minute video “Bag It” which will be the session opener for a discussion on reducing the use of this product. Our event will take place on Sat., April 23rd at a public venue in Cortez.
We already have buy-in from several other local non-profit groups. In addition, the three largest local retailers, City Market, Safeway and Wal-mart will participate as well as several smaller local businesses. Wal-mart has already pledged 200 reuseable grocery bags. Our electric company will give us free advertising space in their news magazine, which goes to every household in the area (including across the border in Monticello, Utah).
In addition we will show the Annie Leonard video, “The story of Plastic Bottles” and discuss the harm of this product. We will have more details as we near the date.
